English 원문
Dry cedar and old cotton filled Joel’s nose as the attic hatch lifted. Rafael climbed the narrow steps behind him, carrying a small oil lamp that quivered with each footfall. A striped cat hopped from the landing and padded ahead, its paws soundless on the wide beam. Thin light from a square window cut across stacked boxes, glass jars, and one broad wooden crate near the far wall. Dust motes hung in the pale band, turning slowly when the cat’s tail passed through. Joel bent, rubbed his palm over a patch of smooth pine, and felt the grain catch his skin.
An irregular wooden piece lay beside his shoe, as if it had slipped from an old puzzle. He picked it up, then set it aside and pressed both hands against the crate’s corner. The rough boards scraped his fingers, but curiosity asked for another push, so he leaned in. The first shove met heavy drag; the floorboards gripped like sandpaper. He shifted his stance and tried again, angling the crate toward a threadbare rug. On that softer surface it slid a finger farther, giving a sharp squeak. A third attempt sent it across a glossy patch where polished knots offered almost no hold; the sudden glide startled the cat, which darted after the rolling puzzle piece.
“You are moving furniture already,” Rafael laughed, his boots knocking gently on the joist. Joel straightened. Two beams above showed photographs pinned between them; one faded image kept remarkable resolution, each roof tile behind a young unknown boy still clear. Another shot beside it looked like a rival print, edges curled and dark, as though light had challenged it for years. Dust shaken by the moving crate drifted upward and settled onto the pictures. The crate now rested below the window, leaving a fresh track across three textures of wood. That unplanned mark felt worth every tug. Before Joel could speak, the loose puzzle piece kept spinning near the cat’s paws. With each half turn it tapped the boards and the dust ring under it widens.
