Leo had always searched for forgotten corners to photograph, and tonight he noticed a silent warehouse beside the frozen river. The wide doors had been left ajar, so he stepped inside carrying his camera and tripod. A yuletide melody drifted from distant streets, slipping through cracked windows and echoing among metal beams. Near the center, a faded carousel waited, horses frozen mid-gallop, mirrors dulled by dust. Overhead bulbs still hung, though their wiring sagged like tired ribbons. Leo set the tripod, yet the dimness pressed against the lens, hiding details he wanted. He adjusted the aperture, bent lower, and exhaled white vapor that blurred the viewfinder.
A sudden vortex of cold air swept through the gap, spinning paper cups across the concrete floor and rattling the tripod. Leo caught the camera before it struck the ground, but the jolt misaligned every setting he had prepared. If he had tightened the screws earlier, the shake would have mattered less. He steadied the frame again, tightening each joint with slow, deliberate turns. Then a cascade of silver tinsel, loosened from the rafters by the draft, drifted between the lens and the horses. Threads of foil twirled, catching whatever light survived, forcing him to wipe the glass and wait. His fingers reddened; breath puffed; yet he continued adjusting shutter speed, searching for steadiness.
Minutes later, a single bulb flickered alive, followed by another, until a scattered ring of scintillation circled the ride. The horses gained faint colors, and the mirrors caught tiny sparks, returning them like small suns. At that exact moment the draft calmed, leaving the room suddenly still. Leo pressed the shutter, the camera clicked twice, and the bulbs dimmed as quickly as they had brightened. When he reviewed the final image on the screen, a surprise emerged. One wooden horse appeared blurred forward, as though finishing its turn while everything else remained sharp. He lowered the camera, and the silent carousel rested under soft, fading light.
