Beyond the birches, smoke curled from chimneys, and the village square looked tranquil, as if holding its breath for the winter festival. Leo stepped forward, crunching over drifted snow, unaware that a shallow trench hid beneath the white surface, waiting to challenge his careful progress toward the dome.

The lantern shook when his boot plunged into the hidden trench, and a bloom of loose snow dusted his coat. He steadied himself, but the fall had chipped a corner of the lantern’s rim. A bridge of planks had been laid across the gap earlier, yet shifting snow had buried the boards. If Leo had carried a shovel, he could have cleared the path at once. Instead, he crawled out, packed firmer snow along the edges, and slid the lantern over the makeshift ramp created by his forearms. While he worked, distant voices began to converge; volunteers were moving sleds of firewood toward the square.

Halfway to the igloo, a silver shape rolled from behind a snow mound—a young seal, lost and blinking at the unfamiliar shore of rooftops. The surprise stalled everyone’s tasks; even the dogs fell silent. Leo knelt, holding the lantern steady. The animal sniffed the glowing ice, then flopped back toward a creek that traced the village edge. Once the seal vanished under the bridge, footsteps resumed, and the unfinished path grew wider as more hands scooped snow aside. If he had packed spare batteries, the wait would have felt longer, yet twilight arrived exactly when the last obstacle cleared. Soft light rested inside the igloo.
