Keeping them whole stayed vital for the morning event.

She walked along the narrow pavement toward the gate.

Rough gravel pressed under her shoes and scratched the box.

Wind teased her coat; cooler weather raced over the street.

An anxious tap burst from a loose lid corner.

She gave one quick check and held the box tighter.

At the gate, a splintered plank hooked her bag strap.

The sudden pull shook her arms and tipped the box forward.

It slid, bumped a stone, and rolled onto fresh grass.

Lid sprang open and colored cookies dotted the fresh grass.

Emma knelt, counting them with quick moving hands.

No cracks showed; the icing stayed neat despite the tumble.

She tucked each cookie back and closed the rough lid again.

Grass stains speckled the box, yet her steps continued inside.
