Mia checked the address twice, then stepped through the narrow alley toward LensLine Studio. She had spent several late evenings filling her sketchbook; the producer had invited local artists to pitch ideas for a short animation. A distant metro rumble vibrated the pavement. Yet a pocket of tranquility hovered over the doorway, as if sound stayed outside the blue glass. Genuine interest flickered across her face; her eyebrows rose and her shoulders straightened whenever the sketchbook brushed her palm. Inside the lobby, film posters decorated the walls, and a bronze bell waited beside a clipboard that listed arrival times.
Mia tapped the bell; a bright chime echoed, but no footsteps followed. The display screen behind the counter showed an editing timeline frozen on frame forty-five. She glanced at the meeting room; curtains had been drawn, and low bass resonance leaked through the fabric. Assuming the team was reviewing audio, she tried the corridor door; the handle refused to turn. She had been told the session would finish by three, yet her watch now read half past. If she had known about the delay, she would have brought her tablet to refine colors. She wished she had taped the loose pages earlier; several corners curled upward under the lobby’s air flow. Instead, she flipped her sketchbook open on a coffee table and arranged the pages like stepping-stones across the wood.
Minutes passed before the corridor door clicked and a grey-haired man emerged, rubbing his eyes. He stopped when he noticed the improvised gallery. Without a word, he crouched, tracing the arc of a sailing cloud on page three. His gaze drifted to a small cat Mia had sketched absent-mindedly in the corner; a slow grin widened while his fingers drummed on his knee. The illustrator kept silent, though her toes tapped an irregular rhythm inside her sneakers. At last the producer stood, lifting the sketchbook with deliberate care and nodding toward the screening room whose curtains now parted. Footlights blinked awake against the polished floor, and fresh energy hovered between posters and ceiling lamps.
Soft light rested on the calm coffee table.
Translation
