Evening, Rio crouched at the edge of his grandmother’s vegetable patch, phone raised. He aimed to capture the first firefly of early summer before dinner cooled. Dim light covered the lettuce leaves, and wet soil clung to his knees, slowing any quick move. A pair of cats wandered across the rows and stirred the plants, so the insect’s tiny glow kept vanishing behind dancing shadows. The phone camera, which has often worked well in daylight, refused to focus now; every picture appeared blurred. When Rio leaned closer, his elbow slipped, and the phone flashed at the ground instead of the air.

The sudden burst of light revealed something unexpected among the roots—a green jewel no bigger than a pea. It lay where water had collected, throwing back points of colour like a hidden star. It seemed to have been buried under loose soil earlier that week, then lifted by the rain. Rio forgot the mud on his sleeves; he steadied the phone again, but this time for a different subject. As he lifted the jewel, a firefly settled on its smooth surface, turning the small stone into a living lantern. Rio has taken many photos in this garden, yet none carried such accident. The camera clicked twice; then the insect lifted away, and the stone rested in his open palm while evening sounds settled around the patch.
