Rowan left the gravel path as the last afternoon light slipped behind distant ridges. A narrow footbridge spanned a steep ravine where a restless waterfall tumbled out of sight and hurled spray into the air. He aimed to cross before darkness deepened, carrying a rolled sketchbook for a friend who waited in the next valley. Foam and driftwood danced below, spinning in whirlpools that flickered silver. The bridge’s wet planks glistened, and a hush hung between gusts of wind and water.

A first step landed without sound, yet the second brought resistance. A warped board sank, and Rowan’s boot slid; he caught the rail before balance vanished. Ahead, several planks lay buried under a tangled wedge of driftwood wedged tight against the railing. The heap formed an impasse: branches locked at odd angles, dripping and heavy, held fast by the river’s steady push. Rowan pressed a shoulder against the top branch. Nothing shifted. A fresh wave struck the pile, spraying his coat and forcing him back. Dusk pushed closer, turning mist to violet shadows.

Rowan scanned the bridge and noticed a narrow gap where water pulsed through the timber. Beneath that slit, a single branch quivered with every surge. He knelt, fingers searching for loosened nails. One iron spike had nearly rusted through. Rowan pried it free with a flat stone, then pulled again at the branch. The wood refused at first; a second pull sent a shiver down the whole bundle. The river caught the loosened edge, yanking the branch outward. Momentum carried the rest of the pile, releasing it piece by piece. Freed, the driftwood whirled away toward the waterfall, and a small metal lantern, hidden inside the tangle, rolled onto the deck. Rowan lifted it; a dime-sized flint inside sparked when shaken, throwing brief orange light across the wet planks. With the barrier gone, the bridge lay clear. Water still roared below, but its rhythm sounded more even, as if space had opened for it to pass.

The lantern rested on a smooth rock beside the quiet bridge.

第一步落下沒有聲響，第二步卻遇到阻力。翹起的木板下沉，羅恩的靴子滑開，他抓住欄杆才穩住身體。前方幾塊橋板被一團卡在欄杆的浮木堵住，那團枝幹交錯、滴水沉重，在河流穩定的推力下緊緊卡死，形成一道障礙。羅恩用肩頂住最上面的枝幹，卻紋絲不動。一股新水浪猛然拍擊那堆木，水花濺濕他的外套，他只得退後。黃昏壓近，水霧被染成紫色陰影。

羅恩掃視橋面，發現橋板間有一道窄縫，水流在下面脈動。一根枝條隨每一次湧浪輕顫。他跪下，指尖摸到一顆幾乎鏽斷的鐵釘，用平坦石頭撬開後，再度拉扯那枝條。最初木頭仍拒絕鬆動；第二次用力，整束枝幹隨之顫動。河水抓住鬆脫的邊緣，將那枝條往外扯走，接著帶動其餘木塊，一件件順勢脫落。浮木脫困後在瀑布方向旋轉遠去，一盞小金屬提燈從雜堆中滾到橋面。羅恩撿起它，搖晃時裡面的燧石擦出橙光，映亮濕漉漉的橋板。障礙消失，橋面重新暢通。下方水聲仍轟鳴，但節奏更均勻，好像河道得到釋放空間。

提燈靜靜地靠在平滑的石頭上，橋邊水聲低沉。
