English Original

Mira drifted through the Saturday market, shoes tapping against uneven cobblestones that glimmered after a brief shower. Handwoven canopies stretched above her, each one a patch of color against the mild sky. She carried a simple goal: trade six small coins for a carved wooden whistle her nephew collected. Around her, vendors balanced trays of sugared nuts, glass beads, and folded maps; two teenagers tried to assemble a paper kite between stalls, its sticks crossing and uncrossing in the light breeze. At the far corner, a pickle vendor extraordinaire scooped bright slices into jars so swiftly that brine splashed over his cuffs.

The breeze thickened without warning, spinning loose napkins, petals, and ticket stubs into a cheerful maelstrom. A bamboo screen clattered, startling a jaybird that had been pecking at crumbs near Mira’s boot. The bird shot upward, clipping a string of paper lanterns so that crimson circles bobbed and tangled. She steadied the lanterns with one hand and reached for the whistle with the other, but the thin paper bag the vendor handed over split at its seam. The whistle and several coins clinked onto the cobblestones. She crouched; the crowd’s shuffling shoes slowed, creating an accidental protective ring, yet one coin rolled toward the gutter, shining like a lure.

The jaybird, wings beating fast, swooped again and seized that gleaming coin. Mira straightened too quickly, brushed a passing shopper’s elbow, then followed the arc of blue feathers toward the pickle stand. The vendor extraordinaire lifted a crust of bread from his sample tray and crumbled it through the air. Breadcrumbs sprinkled the ground, diverting the bird. The coin slipped from its beak, pinged against a jar lid, and spun until friction stilled it. A child clapped; nearby chatter continued as if the moment were part of the regular rhythm of trading and tasting. Mira retrieved the coin, slid both money and whistle into her jacket pocket, and knotted the empty paper bag around them for extra security. Sound gradually softened; the wind eased, lanterns rocked more gently, and steam from a tea kettle rose in a single straight ribbon above the cookfire.

The wooden whistle lay secure beneath the striped awning.

Translation
