Late afternoon light slanted through broken boards, turning dust into drifting gold inside the old barn. Lucas had volunteered for a project run by a small wildlife organisation that mapped nesting sites around the valley. Today his goal sounded simple: climb the loft and photograph a falcon roosting under the roof beams. Outside, meadow insects clicked, forming a layered ecosystem that hummed beyond the doorway while he checked his rope ladder. The first wooden rung cracked under his boot, dropping splinters and forcing him back to the straw-covered floor.

He dragged a hay bale beneath the ladder, thinking extra height would solve the problem. When he climbed again, the bale shifted, and the unstable stack tipped sideways, scraping against a metal bucket. The sudden noise startled the falcon; wings cut the air, and sharp talons flashed close to Lucas’s sleeve. If the first plank had held, he would have reached the nest at once. On the third climb, beams no longer creaked, and the falcon remained alert but motionless on her rough nest. He slipped the memory card away and noticed tools, feed bags, and lingering work ethic lining the narrow platform like silent witnesses. Descending slowly, he unhooked the ladder, kicked loose straw aside, and let fresh evening air fill the barn. Pale sunlight rested across the settled straw and along the quiet rafters.
