Mila Before the Broken Ladder-

English Original
Late afternoon light brushed the orchard as Mila stepped through high grass toward the old oak. She had visited the treehouse every summer until middle school, and a wooden bird whistle, long forgotten, might still rest inside. Bark dust drifted when she touched the trunk; signs of decay darkened the lowest railing. The original ladder had been nailed by her grandfather, yet three rungs now gaped like missing teeth. If she had noticed the damage earlier, she would have brought rope. Instead, she pulled a loose crate toward the trunk and climbed, but the crate tipped and her shoes slipped back onto the soil.
She paced beneath hanging branches, palms dusty. A splintered plank lay near the shed, and a can of bent nails waited inside. The plank was heavier than expected, yet Jonas lifted one end while she balanced the other. Within minutes the improvised rung had been wedged and hammered; each strike sent a dull thud through the wood. During the work, several nails scattered across moss, forcing Mila to kneel and gather them before climbers stepped on them later. She ascended again, shoulders tightened, only to meet a swollen hatch that refused to budge. She leaned harder; the impact shook pine cones free, and they pattered over the roof.
At last the hatch shifted. Mila ducked through and crouched on a floor that had been painted by her cousin years earlier. Dust spiraled in narrow beams. A fresh carving of a tiny star glimmered on a beam, and from its smooth edges Mila could infer a recent hand—perhaps her younger brother—had visited after her last summer. Beside the carving lay the whistle, polished clean. She wrapped her fingers around it, settled near the window, and listened to leaves hiss around the oak. Dust hung in the slanting light above the small whistle.
