The railing now sat firm, but the branch’s rebound tipped the inner boards upward like the raised edge of a tiny delta. Nora’s hammer rolled toward an opening; she grabbed it just in time and saw daylight shine through a fresh split between two center planks. Securing the rim had pulled wood inward, stealing support from the middle. Her shoulders rose and fell once, then she shifted strategy. She wedged her forearm under the tilted boards, exhaled, and let her weight settle closer to the trunk. Kit slid back, testing the compromise. The outer edge no longer rocked, and the center no longer gaped, though a narrow step now lay uneven across the grain. Below, their father called up a question; both answered with a brief wave. Wind slipped through again, bending leaves and dropping mottled light over their work. Along the overlap, fresh sawdust clung where the planes met and formed a pale stripe across the darker wood.
