Sharp pine sap stung Kit’s nose the moment he stepped onto the half-finished platform, its honey-colored beads glinting between rough bark ridges that looked like a miniature ravine. Nora waited at the branch junction, balancing a custom-made railing plank across her knees while a bucket knocked the trunk below. Their plan held two parts: fix the loose outer plank before the wind returned and keep the center boards flush so tools would not slide through the gaps. The measurement had been taken during the calm; the new plank was only a fraction longer than the space allowed, yet the breeze kept tilting the branches and widening the gap. When a lull arrived, Kit crouched low, braced his boots, and pressed the board until the nail caught softer grain. He had already forced the metal home before the next gust curled the leaves.
The railing now sat firm, but the branch’s rebound tipped the inner boards upward like the raised edge of a tiny delta. Nora’s hammer rolled toward an opening; she grabbed it just in time and saw daylight shine through a fresh split between two center planks. Securing the rim had pulled wood inward, stealing support from the middle. Her shoulders rose and fell once, then she shifted strategy. If they had nudged the railing a breath earlier, the knot on the underside would have stayed hidden, yet the choice was past. She wedged her forearm under the tilted boards, exhaled, and let her weight settle closer to the trunk. The boards flattened, but only by overlapping their ends so one sat a thumb’s height above the other.
Kit slid back, testing the compromise. The outer edge no longer rocked, and the center no longer gaped, though a narrow step now lay uneven across the grain. Below, their father called up a question; both answered with a brief wave. Wind slipped through again, bending leaves and dropping mottled light over their work. Along the overlap, fresh sawdust clung where the planes met and formed a pale stripe across the darker wood.
