Leo stepped from the museum corridor into a narrow passage filled with vines, and the air thickened like a pocket-sized jungle. Damp leaves brushed his sleeves while dynamic beams of sunlight flickered between the glass panels overhead. He had packed three pencils and a compact set of watercolors, certain he could finish a quick sketch before closing time. Ahead, a scarlet parrot balanced on a rope, head tilted, feathers catching every stray ray. The instant Leo knelt, a creak in the floorboards sent the bird flapping deeper among the palms, and a cloud of fallen petals scattered across his blank page.
The rope had been fixed above an artificial stream, and the parrot now paused on the far side, barely visible through mist. Leo tried a longer lens, yet droplets blurred the view and left gray specks on his lens cap. The outer gate had been locked earlier that morning, so circling around was impossible; instead, he crouched, lifted the tripod, and shuffled sideways beneath drooping ferns. If he had stayed by the entrance bench, he would have missed an unexpected helper: a second, distinctly playful bird swooped down, landing straight on his watercolor pan. Wet pigment smudged its feet like sticky confetti.
Before Leo could lift the palette, the newcomer hopped across his unfinished sheet, stamping teal, yellow, and crimson ovals along the margins. The first parrot, curious now, glided back and settled beside the spectacle. Leo’s hands froze, then drifted away from the page, allowing the lively press of feathers and color to continue. When the birds finally paused, the sketch looked less precise and far more alive. Colored footprints dried on the corner of the paper while the two birds perched on the silent rail.
