Lena entered the old botanical garden just after rain, sketchbook tucked under one arm. Passion vines climbed the iron arch, their magenta flowers hanging like tiny lanterns. The air carried wet soil and citrus from nearby bushes, and low mist drifted between benches. She hoped to wander until she located a giant tree fern reported in a travel magazine. The gate to the fern wing had been painted by volunteers, yet fresh paint kept it half-open and sticky. A red squirrel paused on the rail, whiskers twitching toward Lena’s graphite pencils, then bounded inside before she could follow.
Inside, scattered puddles broke the smooth path. Water and light formed a quiet synergy; reflections flashed upward and confused her footing. If the glass roof had been clear, her first sketch would have taken minutes. Instead, bright glare covered each page, so she crouched behind a broad banana leaf for shade. The squirrel returned, tail raised, then dashed toward a low bridge that crossed a shallow koi channel. Boards under her shoes shifted; one bolt wobbled free and trapped her heel. She wriggled loose, but the sudden move startled the animal. It leaped onto her open sketchbook, tiny claws sliding across damp paper, leaving dark streaks and half-moon prints.
Lena turned the page and tried again, now sitting on a dry stone. The fern finally appeared ahead, each frond wider than her shoulders, forming its own miniature ecosystem for moss and droplets. Graphite lines grew over the paper; the earlier smear added unexpected texture around the trunk. She adjusted strokes to echo that pattern, and the drawing accepted the accident without complaint. Puddles near the stone slowly shrank, birds chirped in the palm section beyond a curtain of vines, and warm air settled under the roof. Muddy paw prints dried beside her pencil strokes, while the squirrel rested on the warm railing.
Translation
