Kai balanced a shoebox robot on his arm. A thick stream of students drifted along the main corridor. The science fair would open in ten minutes. The judges’ table, placed beyond the crowd, still looked far. Yesterday, table spaces had been settled after a noisy negotiation in the gym. Since then, Kai has promised himself to arrive early. Beside the robot, folded papers detailed a recovery plan. The document explained how the machine could stand again if it toppled. Each second passed; shoulders brushed his own; a fallen backpack blocked movement. Kai scanned the walls, looking for any path that avoided the squeeze.
Behind a stack of paint cans, a narrow metal door rested half open. Kai slipped through and found a service tunnel lit by single bulbs. Pipes lined the ceiling, and their occasional drips dotted his sleeve. The passage was lined with dusty cables and smelled faintly of oil. After twenty quick steps, he met a ladder that rose behind velvet curtains. A faded arrow marked the official escape route for staff above the rungs. He climbed, lifted a hatch, and gasped when stage lights flashed across his shoes. The judges waited only five steps away, unaware of his backdoor arrival. That shortcut, discovered by chance, revealed unexpected potential in the old building. Kai set the robot on the cloth, and its motors whirred under steady light.
