Four paces lay between the open service door and the first metal shelf. Owen stepped inside, and his shoes rasped softly across the sandy concrete floor. A row of folded blankets filled the lower rack, and stacked cartons leaned above them. Warm air hung near the ceiling bulb, while cooler pockets lingered along the floor. Cole followed inside, allowing the door to rest gently against its rubber stop. He lightly tapped a broad cardboard box with his elbow against the battered corner. The edge caught on the rough ground and produced a dry scrape. “That scratchy sound is louder than the playground bell,” he laughed, tilting his head. Owen crouched, pressed both palms against the box, and pushed until it dragged another hand-span forward.
The cardboard grazed the floor, yet its corners wedged against a strip of peeling paint. Owen shuffled sideways and chose a lighter tin of nails from the second shelf nearby. The round base slid easier, yet squeaked whenever the rim crossed a damp patch. Cole knelt beside a coiled swing, its wooden seat dusty from the yard. He pulled the rope; fibers gripped his fingers, then slipped when he relaxed his hold. Together they nudged each item toward the far wall, and an aisle gradually opened. Bright metal buttons spilled from a loosened cloth pouch onto the concrete path. They scattered like small bounty, rolling across the aisle until surface friction finally stopped each one.
“These shelves hide more than tools,” Cole said, his voice echoing softly among the crates. Owen’s sleeve rubbed along the upper plank and loosened a paper roll wedged behind paint cans. The roll slipped, scraped down the metal rungs, and unfolded in the air as a kite. A sliver of light from the window transformed the dull paper into sharp reds and blues. The slender frame tapped the wooden swing seat once before gliding toward the open aisle. It rested on the floor beside a row of mops kept for cleanup chores. Gray dust floated for a brief breath and then settled back onto the shelves. The overhead bulb hummed steadily above the quiet aisle and the waiting boxes.
Translation
