Seedling at Dusk-

Story Content
English Original
Nico balanced a tray with a single tomato seedling as he crossed the grass behind the library. He had spent the morning mixing compost, and the potting soil had been sifted by careful hands. If he had known the ground would feel like brick, he would have brought a metal trowel. When the thin blade met the earth, the tip bent at once, leaving only a shallow scratch. A puff of gray dust drifted upward and settled on his shoes. The stalled start sketched the first line of an unexpected narrative for the evening. He shook the canteen beside his ear, and only a faint slosh answered him. Even the air tasted dusty, coating his tongue with a mild grit.
Nico tried pressing the spoon from his lunchbox into the dry patch, yet the handle twisted free. The watering can he counted on had been left behind in his classroom. Clouds, unnoticed until then, gathered above the library roof and dimmed the bright edges of daylight. The change in light gave rise to a hush; even the playground swing stopped creaking. Fat drops landed, loosening the surface like slow fingers opening a stubborn lid. Water pooled over the scratch, and Nico pressed the seedling downward until its roots disappeared. The unexpected shower became a fruitful partner, turning his earlier struggle into a simple planting. When the rain thinned, he covered the soil with a circle of pebbles, certain the outcome would taste sweet in summer. A faint afterglow lingered behind the clouds, and the tiny plant rested under beads of water.
Translation
