English Original
Jonas slid across the warm paving stone and crouched beside the shrinking puddle, charcoal stub scratching softly on his notebook as he tried to copy the branching mineral lines. The charcoal made a dry rasp, yet the page showed little because his shoulder blocked the sunlight; the rim of water ticked in slow protest, each faint pop a reminder that evaporation needed light. He edged backward, hoping to conquer the angle without losing the view. A gutter above released an irregular drip that landed with a hollow plunk, sending two rings racing toward each other; the circles met in a brief dispute and vanished under the leaf that floated like a tiny pilot steering through clear glass.
Dawn arrived and sat on the same observation stone, her boots giving a muted thud. She had been sketching the shaded half earlier, and the darker surface had evolved into sharper reflections under her careful watch. When she leaned forward, both shadows merged, and the luminous rim halted, its quiet hiss replaced by a flat silence. They traded places; Jonas now faced the sunny side, Dawn the cool shade. His first strokes skittered again, so he flattened his palm on the stone to lift his elbow, a small adjustment that allowed light to pour over the meniscus. The patterns began to evolve once more, fine grains arranging themselves into ridges no wider than thread. Just then the gutter drip struck harder, driving a narrow stream over the evaporation rim; the water slid past the leaf, nudged a pebble, and swept pale silt toward Dawn’s drawing knee. She pressed a twig beside the flow, the stiff bark humming against the stone, and the miniature flood slowed, its last beads rolling into a crevice where an ant marched across the dried pattern zone like a lone adventurer.
On the bench nearby, a sparrow shook rainwater from its feathers and darted after a drifting gnat, its wings whispering through the warm courtyard air.
Translation
