Milo had planned the outing for weeks. Dawn spread pale silver above the small town as he rolled his old hatchback toward the hilltop parking spot. The car trembled; the gearshift stuck midway between gears, and his knuckles whitened while he nudged it forward. A whistle from distant rails echoed—his signal that the early freight train would pass soon. If he had known what awaited him, he would have set his alarm earlier, yet the scent of a breath of fresh air kept his window open despite the chill. At last the lever slid home, and the motor climbed the narrow road.
At the crest, a sagging gate blocked the viewpoint. It had been locked by a previous owner after late-night parties left trash behind, leaving only a gap beside the fence. Milo slipped through, tripod tapping against wood. A fallen branch snagged his backpack strap; he twisted free, then found the footpath washed out by spring rain. He balanced on exposed roots and, with a leap of faith, cleared a muddy trench. His boots landed on stones that groaned under weight, yet held. Above him, low clouds floated in a formation that resembled a grey battleship, its flat deck glowing with first light. He set the tripod and adjusted the lens.
A dark speck rose beyond the cloud-line. It swelled into a rainbow envelope—an unexpected hot-air balloon flight drifting straight into his frame. Milo hurried between controls, widening the shot, but the tripod leg slid on damp moss. He tightened the clamp, snapped series after series, and exhaled only when the balloon cleared the clouds like a tiny escape boat leaving the steel hull of the sky. The train thundered past seconds later, plume crossing beneath the balloon, turning the entire scene into layered motion. Morning light rested on the quiet camera.
