Vega crouched beside the observation window while dim lamps traced soft circles across the metal floor. Beyond the tempered glass, loose clouds of sand drifted around the station’s curved walls and small fish zigzagged past sensors. As the station’s sole oceanographer on rotation, Vega ran a glove along the readout panel, checking the numbers that kept the chambers safe. A narrow corridor ended at a pressure-sealed hatch leading to an external maintenance bay. A timer ticked beside the jamb; routine inspection of a clogged intake vent awaited. Vega fitted a helmet, air hissed inside, and the intercom clicks faded under the suit.
Moving toward the round door, Vega twisted the manual wheel. The mechanism stalled halfway, metal teeth grinding. The station remained a carefully balanced pressurized environment, so any uneven tension in the seal mattered. Vega studied the pressure gauge; the needle hovered just above green, yet the hatch declined to budge. Shoulders squared, Vega loosened a secondary valve, a thin ribbon of air venting with a sharp whistle. The wheel rotated another quarter turn before jamming again, prompting Vega to tap the housing; a thud echoed down the corridor, and settled vibrations shivered through ceiling plates.
Through the window inset in the hatch, a pale shape slid over the exterior handle. An octopus, mottled umber against the gray steel, explored the bolts with calm precision. One arm pressed the lever downward; the internal gauge flicked, and the obstruction inside clicked free. Vega’s eyebrows lifted; gloved palms returned to the wheel. The octopus shifted, pupils narrowing, then released the lever and floated backward on a puff of water. The unexpected assist eased the remaining resistance; the wheel completed its circle. Water did not surge in—balance held—yet a stray cluster of silt spun across the threshold.
Vega waited while sensors confirmed equal values on both sides. Only when numbers steadied did the outer panel unlock. The hatch opened on silent hinges, revealing a narrow bay filled with tool crates, marine growth clinging to cables, and faint green light diffused from the seafloor. Farther off, the octopus hovered near a cracked shell, turning it as though considering a puzzle before fading into darkness. Vega anchored the vent filter into its slot, secured it, and swung the door inward once more. Water beads rested along the corridor tiles.
