Every late afternoon Ruby settled into the operations room, fingers curling around the same dented mug before power-up. Tonight, though, dusk cooled the drink so quickly that a metallic tang met her tongue. The monitors blinked awake in gentle sequence, but the chair beside hers remained pushed back, headset hanging in an empty arc. The cable drum turned while she ran the checklist, its rhythmic click normally blending with conversation that no longer filled the space. Her tongue touched her lip, salt lingering, and the quiet tasted oddly thick, as though sound itself had gone stale. Only after that flavor lodged did she push the joystick forward and watch the underwater light bloom.

Pixels rolled across the main screen, and the small ROV descended past basalt ridges already mapped months earlier. Seldom had the feed shown such fine grains drifting so slowly on the descent today. Each mote slipped through the lamp beam like powder, crowding the picture with ambiguity that tasted of chalk on her tongue. She nudged the thrusters, noting fresh scratches on the joystick cap—straight, even lines that had not been there the previous season. It was the slight delay in the spool that caught her ear, a delay not recorded in manuals yet impossible to miss once heard.

A minute later the searchlight swept over a seafloor pipe left by an old experiment, and sediment billowed, veiling the view. Ruby leaned closer, then paused; the image on the glassy screen blurred, regained shape, and blurred once more beneath the drifting dust. Were the floodlights brighter, the sediment would glare white, yet turning them up risked frightening the jellyfish that drifted nearby. The dilemma pinched her shoulders—not urgent, simply insistent—so she rested the joystick, choosing to wait. During that small stillness she noticed another nuance: the cable counter ticked half a beat slower than the depth gauge. That slight mismatch hinted at unseen slack forming somewhere along the cable outside the hull, although no audible alarm sounded in the room. She reached for a tiny screwdriver, as tinkering with the counter might explain the lag, then set it back, recognizing the room itself was telling enough.

The grains finally settled; on the screen the pipe lay silent under the ROV’s beam, nothing demanded her intervention. Ruby reeled the machine upward a few metres, lines of pale green depth numbers stacking neatly, and glanced at the empty chair. Only then did her own chair slide a fraction to one side, clearing space that nobody claimed. She logged the observation with a date yet left the comment box blank, cursor flickering for a moment before closing. The room lights dimmed to standby, and the cable drum slowed further until the steel strands were merely whispering against the brass guide. She stood, capped the mug, and carried both the cocoa sachet and the cup toward the galley. The cold coating of tin lingered across her palate while soft evening wind outside brought a suggestion of salt against her teeth.

不久後，探照燈掃過一截舊實驗留下的海底管線，沉積物翻起，視野變模糊。Ruby 湊近又停下；螢幕影像模糊、復清，又再度蒙霧。若投光燈再亮些，沉積物會閃成白片，但那可能驚擾附近漂浮的水母。這小小的兩難扼在她肩頭，她索性靜待。短暫寂靜裡，她察覺另一層細微：纜線計數器的節拍比深度計慢半拍。這微小不合暗示船殼外的纜線可能鬆些，卻沒有警報響起。她拿起小螺絲起子，想調調計數器再找原因，最後又放下，覺得房間本身已說得夠多。

顆粒終於沉靜；螢幕上的管線躺在光束下，不再需要處理。Ruby 回收 ROV 幾公尺，綠色深度數字整齊往上疊，並掃了一眼空椅。這時，她自己的椅子輕輕橫移一小段，空出沒人要的空間。她在表格上記日期，卻把備註欄留白，游標閃了幾下便關閉。室燈降到待機，纜鼓更慢，鋼纜在銅導槽上只發出細微的摩擦聲。她起身，蓋上杯子，順手把可可粉與杯子一起帶向餐廳。錫味在口中殘留，外頭柔和的夜風吹來，在牙縫間留下淡淡海鹽感。
