Eli woke early and wanted fresh bread. He left home for a slow morning stroll. He turned onto a lantern-lit street beside his door. The road curved into a winding lane near trees. A delightful scent of cinnamon drifted past him. It came from the busy local market ahead.

Stalls filled the square and voices mixed with music. Eli stepped around baskets and reached the bread stand. A cart wheel struck a stone and jerked sideways. Apples bounced out and rolled under moving feet. People halted suddenly; bags swung and bumped each other. Eli kneeled, gathered apples, and stacked them again. The vendor grinned and handed him a warm pastry. Inside the flaky crust hid a tiny silver whistle. Eli blew softly; a little tune echoed between stalls. Nearby children clapped, forming a playful circle around him. Bread steam curled upward while laughter filled the square. He tucked the whistle away and walked toward home.
