Low lights glowed across the city museum kitchen after the public had gone. Mira had spent the morning piping tall swirls of meringue onto a small lemon tart, hoping it would impress the judges of tomorrow’s pastry contest. Because the fridge inside the service corridor stayed colder than her shared apartment, she had left the flavorsome dessert there for safety. Now, with coat folded over one arm, she tugged at the metal handle. The latch refused to shift; thin frost clung to its edge, and her knuckles reddened against the metal.
She fetched rubber gloves, wedged her shoulder against the door, and pushed again. Nothing moved. If she had known the latch would rebel, she would have kept the tart in her own locker. A spoon became her next tool; its bowl bent before the hinge loosened. Just as the seal finally popped, a soft cough drifted from the corridor. A silver-haired gentleman in a charcoal suit stood under the exit sign, hands calmly linked. His eyebrow lifted toward the half-open fridge. "I may have let the cat out of the bag earlier," he said, tilting his head toward the gallery beyond the swinging doors.
Curiosity pulled Mira through the silent halls. A new display waited in the small annex where visitors usually tested clay textures. Under a spotlight rested her tart, framed by velvet cloth; a notice beside it invited guests to explore the piece’s tactile layers once it warmed. The gentleman observed her wide eyes and offered a linen napkin without a word. She had already witnessed fingerprints along the glossy lemon surface, yet the swirl still held its shape. Crumbs rested on the silver tray.
Translation
