Luke arrived before sunrise at Stonewell National Park, camera bag bumping softly against his hip. The visitor center lights still glowed, and only a few hikers traced the asphalt ribbon toward the lake. He hoped to spot the elusive blue egret rumored to glide across the water at dawn. A guaranteed sighting never existed around wild creatures, yet rumors travel fast among photographers, and footsteps carried him forward. Dew clung to reed tips, and the air tasted minty from nearby pines. An overjoyed stream splashed beside the trail, tossing droplets that caught the first pale bands of daylight.
Luke unfolded his tripod on a wooden platform. The lake mirrored grey cloud streaks; dragonflies swirled above lily pads. Clicks from distant shutters blended with low wind, and an easy harmony settled between human excitement and morning noises. While adjusting the lens, he noticed moisture creeping across the glass; thin mist drifted directly from the lake and blurred each outline. He wiped the filter once, yet the haze returned. A canoeist paddled near the reeds, and ripples rocked the platform, nudging one tripod leg off balance. The leg slid, the camera dipped forward, and Luke caught the strap a moment before it slammed the rail.
He steadied the gear and rotated the mount more gracefully, lowering the center of gravity. A faint flap crossed the waterline, but focusing through fog proved impossible; only shifting greys filled the viewfinder. He knelt, swapped to a shorter lens, and tried again. Just then, a small splash redirected every head on the platform toward a fallen branch, yet no bird emerged. The distraction gave Luke a moment to notice movement behind him—a shadow fluttered across his backpack. The blue egret had landed not on the lake but on the railing two steps away, neck arched, feathers smooth as polished porcelain.
Luke froze, then inched the camera sideways until the lens aligned with the unexpected guest. The egret regarded the gathering equipment without alarm, its pale eyes level with the glass. A silence circled the platform; even the canoeist halted mid-stroke. Without warning the bird stretched its wings, and the sudden lift of pale feathers filled the frame. He pressed the shutter; the sound rippled outward, echoing across water and treeline. The egret rose, wingtips brushing the still air, and drifted toward open sky. Water lay smooth while the tripod frame rested in the silver light.
