The hall lights outside dimmed, yet Mira kept working at her bedroom desk. She had spent the last week gathering scraps of colored paper and thin cardboard. Tomorrow the science fair opened, and her "Cosmic Ocean" diorama still required final touches. Several shapes had been glued in place earlier that afternoon, forming layered ridges of blue. A broad whale silhouette dangled from a thread, intended to hover above a circular abyss. Below it, a silver dolphin waited with an open mouth that would carry a tiny pearl. In one corner, a pin-sized bulb, labelled online as bright as a quasar, blinked in test mode.
Mira reached up to raise the whale higher, but the cotton thread slipped and the figure flopped sideways. If she had chosen stronger tape, the whale would have stayed aloft without complaint. She replaced the thread with fishing line; meanwhile the cardboard ceiling creaked, releasing glitter across the abyss. The specks scattered over the quasar bulb, dulling its sparkle and throwing uneven shadows along the foam waves. She wiped the surface, yet fingerprints clouded the tiny lens and the light sputtered again. Breathing through pursed lips, she angled the bulb toward the dolphin instead.
Near midnight the room fell silent except for the quasar bulb ticking in a steady rhythm. Mira pressed the pearl into the dolphin's mouth and closed the miniature hinge. She flicked the master switch; the beam passed through the pearl and painted swirling rings across the abyss. Footsteps approached; her brother leaned inside, and Mira's elbow bumped the table at his unexpected entrance. The nudge rocked the base, the fishing line swung, and the whale glided after the drifting dolphin. Brief laughter echoed, then both children stood still while the cardboard ocean regained quiet. Tiny lights beneath the seashell roof glowed over cardboard waves.
