A laminated species card, a swivel magnifying panel, and a pale spotlight cone framed the coral window where Silas paused beside the railing. Beyond the glass a green fragment drifted in bright water, so small that it first looked like chipped algae floating above a shadow-edge of rock.

The spotlight’s glare poured across the pane, and the tiny speck blurred each time Silas leaned in. He slid the magnifying panel outward and angled it, but reflected-gleam from the metal arm streaked the view and left the water almost white. Behind the glare, darker coral shapes seemed to loom, their intricate branches swallowing the wisp like trees around a hidden meadow. Silas steadied the panel a second time, lowering it by a hand’s width; the beam fell lower, yet a bright band still crossed the glass.

A cooler glow seeped from a nearby jellyfish tank, and that softer light erased part of the glare. Silas shifted his stance, raised one palm as a shield, and the water cleared just long enough to show the truth: the “algae� carried a curled tail. A baby seahorse clung to a blade of seagrass, its body thin as a silken thread, its head turning with the slow current. The earlier green speck was only its belly; the rest of the creature had blended perfectly with the grass around it. Silas tightened his fingers, holding the panel at the new angle; the beam remained low, and the seahorse kept bobbing like a paper puppet on an invisible string.

Somewhere behind him the camera shutter of his parent clicked three times, light from their phone flickered across the floor tiles, and footsteps from an approaching school group rustled the laminated cards. Silas kept one eye on the seahorse, his other hand still blocking the spotlight, and he was leaning closer, one palm pressed flat against the cool glass.
