English Original
Milo balanced a slim wooden frame in both palms while stepping onto the harbor market’s damp boards. Inside the frame hung a tiny glass globe, and inside that globe glinted a pale blue gemstone. The piece combined seashell chips, wire, and driftwood—a one-of-a-kind ornament promised to a craft stall at the far end of the quay. Between Milo and the stall stretched rows of barrels, rope coils, and the steady tide of shoppers bargaining beside crates of glistening fish.
The crowd pressed from all angles, turning the path into a living maze. A porter's shoulder brushed Milo; his elbow jumped, and the frame tilted. He steadied it just before it touched a stack of net weights. At the next stall a metal hook clanged, startling a nearby cook who was selecting a live lobster for lunch. The cook’s sleeve caught the crate’s lid, and several lobsters splashed across the planks. One determined creature scuttled forward, its dark shell knocking against Milo’s boot. In that same instant the glass globe slipped from the loosened frame, rolled once, and stopped between the lobster’s raised claws like a glittering marble.
Gasps leapt from surrounding shoppers. The lobster, unbothered by attention, sidestepped into a shallow puddle created by melting ice. Milo crouched, slipped a wicker basket from beneath a table, and lowered it in the creature’s path. The basket scraped the wood, creating a mild funnel so the lobster shuffled sideways into its curve. Water slapped against woven reeds; the gemstone rocked free, spinning in a tiny arc until a child’s rubber shoe halted it. The child pointed; a fishmonger leaned down, scooped the stone with blade-scarred fingers, and placed it on Milo’s waiting palm while a ripple of relieved laughter fluttered along the queue.
Milo exhaled, realigned the globe inside its frame, and tightened the wire that held everything together. He lifted the ornament high enough to avoid further collisions and threaded through the final stretch of stalls. When he reached the craft table, the vendor cleared a space between painted cups and set the frame on a driftwood stand. Afternoon light slanted through gaps in the canopy, striking the fresh scratches on the glass and scattering pale ribbons over nearby brass trinkets. Salt water shimmered on the gemstone where it rested inside the wooden frame.
Translation
