Ira the herbalist stepped onto the timber dock just as grey light slipped behind cloud edges. A distant horn moaned against the current, and ropes squeaked where they rubbed wooden posts. Thin streaks of pink light briefly stitched the underbelly of cloud before fading. The market already rumbled; barrows rattled, gulls wheeled, and a burgeoning line of shoppers shuffled between dripping nets. Salt mist clung to coats; a sullen sky pressed low, threatening drizzle yet holding back. Ira nudged a hemp bag higher on her shoulder, fingers counting the empty jars tucked inside. She aimed for the seaweed stall at the far end, where slippery fronds promised fresh iodine bite for her tinctures.
A trawler eased against the pilings, tilting baskets. Engines idled nearby, coughing diesel fumes that tangled with the kelp scent. Vendors tapped cleavers against blocks, marking rhythm for early bidders. A gull dived low, beating wings over her head. Deckhands flung ropes; water slapped through gaps and spun into a narrow vortex around a broken plank. Ira paused, testing her boot against slick timber; the board shifted, then steadied. Ahead, a crate brimming with green strands lurched as a cart wheel clipped it. Fronds slid across the dock; some slapped against her ankle. Knees bent, she reached to gather the spill, yet the wet planks offered little grip. A passer-by sidestepped, sending another slosh of water across the mess.
Among the tangle her palm brushed something cold and muscular. The object jerked, tail flicking water over her sleeve. Eyes widened around her as a palm-sized shark pup emerged from the weed, gills fluttering in air. The creature thrashed, jaws opening in silent protest, then slipped toward a gap between boards. Ira scooped both hands beneath its smooth belly; her elbows wobbled under the sudden weight and she nearly lost balance. A fisherman to her right froze, mouth half-open, while the queue behind kept shuffling, eyes fixed on the counting scales, feet inching forward in rhythm. For a breath the nearby auctioneer paused mid-call, numbers lodging in his throat until chatter spilled back.
Ira edged toward the quay wall where foam lapped with steady rhythm; the earlier vortex now only a gentle eddy. She crouched, lowering the wriggling pup into the brine. Water closed over silver skin, and the shark arrowed away, vanishing beneath the hull. Ripples fanned across piles of loose weed, pushing strands back toward land. She swept the cleaner fronds into her bag, wiped her sleeves against her trousers, and rose as stall bells chimed fresh arrivals. Sunlight finally pried open a gap in the cloud, brushing bronze across wet timber. Steam curled from her cuffs in that new warmth. Seaweed-laden baskets rested against the drying planks.
Translation
