Rosa balanced a wide wooden tray in the warm kitchen. Two cups of apple juice trembled beside toast that was sprinkled with cinnamon, and a small radio played low music near the window. A meaningful weight rested in her hands, so when Miguel shouted “two outs,” she stepped outside. The yard that separated the house from the small field seemed longer than usual because the grass held morning dew. She has practised this short walk many times in her mind, yet the first step slid a shoe sideways and the glasses tapped each other.

A breeze pushed the radio volume higher, and lively notes drifted across the lawn. The unexpected rhythm quickened her pace, but the uneven ground rocked the tray. Time moved fast; Miguel stood on third base, eyes fixed on home plate. To steady everything, Rosa lowered the tray onto a toy wagon, which had been forgotten beside a bush, and guided the small wheels along the patio stones. The bat cracked. The ball arced over the players, missed a branch, and landed in the empty corner among the toast. Juice splashed but stayed inside the cups. Laughter rose, and that small accident turned the snack delivery into an instant celebration. Crumbs sprinkled the grass while the children surrounded the tray.
