English Original
Mid-morning haze still hugged the market road when Kellan paused before the crimson-striped tent. Rumor claimed a living unicorn waited inside, its horn brighter than glass in sunlight. A rope barrier stretched across the flap, and a guard held up a thin rectangle of blue card, then tucked it away again. Kellan’s jaw tightened while his fingers turned out his empty pockets in a useless flourish. A stallholder nearby murmured that an emissary from the Craft Guild had been handing vouchers beside the marsh path earlier. He squared his shoulders and marched toward the marsh, splashing through puddles left by dawn rain.
The plank bridge before the reeds had been warped by weather, and its middle board snapped under his first step. He lunged forward, yet mud gave way like quicksand, swallowing his boots to the ankle and locking both legs. Water lapped over the leather; his breath shortened while fingers searched blindly for solid roots along the bank. A slender birch branch floated near; he hooked an elbow around it and heaved until the mud released him with a gulp. When he staggered up the slope, a white dove burst from the grass, wheeled overhead, and vanished down the trail. Its sudden flight drew his gaze to a canvas satchel lying half-submerged where footprints dotted the wet ground.
The satchel clasp lay open, and stamped seals still clung to the fraying strap, proving it belonged to the guild emissary. Inside, waterlogged papers bled ink, yet one crisp voucher remained protected inside a waxed sleeve. If Kellan had waited longer near the tent, the satchel would have drifted downstream and the chance vanished. He shook excess water away, then jogged back through the market, clothes streaked but spine straight as an iron rail. Evening lamps gleamed when he returned; the guard compared the damp voucher to a dry sample and raised the barrier. Inside the scented tent, a silver puppet unicorn stood beneath drifting ribbons of light.
