English Original
Leila stepped into the riverside market on the first morning of the spring holiday. Peach blossom brushed her sleeve as she joined a slow-moving line at the nearest stall. She had promised her brother a souvenir from every town they had visited so far. This particular village sold hand-carved animals painted in bright colors. A robin flicked through the rafters, scattering straw across the table just as she reached forward. The vendor laughed, wiped the surface, and the rabbit slipped behind a stack of crates. When she bent to search, the line pressed inward and blocked the gap.
She circled the market twice, yet every stall displayed only painted horses and turtles. If she had arrived earlier, she might have secured the final rabbit. The narrow alley grew warmer, and her backpack knocked against woven baskets as she turned. A copper coin rolled from her pocket, bounced once, and vanished between uneven cobbles. Leila crouched, fingertips brushing dust. The robin landed beside the gap, tilted its head, and nudged something shiny toward her boot. The coin had been carried in the bird’s beak; a red thread still clung to it. She set a breadcrumb on the rail, and the bird darted away.
A crate shifted behind the last stall; the earlier wind had pushed it little by little. The wooden rabbit slid free, skidding across the plank floor until it tapped her ankle. Paint on its ear was chipped, showing pale wood beneath the bright green stripe. The vendor turned, surprised that the missing figure had surfaced without guidance. The rabbit had been wrapped in silk that morning, but a careless elbow sent it tumbling. Her recovered coin covered the price, and the rabbit rested at the top of her pack. Evening light rested on the small wooden rabbit beside her tea cup.
