Mira pushed open the campus library’s side door just after sunset. Her documentary class had assigned each student a niche genre, and she had drawn paleontology. She wanted a striking opening image, so her goal tonight involved one object: a century-old photograph of the first fossil excavated near the town. Rumor said the picture lay somewhere in the basement archive, forgotten behind newer collections. She had already sketched shots in her notebook; only the real artifact remained missing. A sign beside the elevator blinked “Out of order,” delaying her pursuit before it truly began. She glanced toward the narrow stairwell and tightened the strap of her camera bag.
The stairs spiraled down, but a cleaning cart blocked the final landing. Mops, buckets, and a dangling caution chain formed a small maze. Mira twisted sideways, yet the bag caught on the handle, sending brushes clattering. She steadied them, then tried sliding under the chain; the metal scraped her jacket. If the elevator had worked, she would have reached the floor quietly and never noticed a dim side corridor branching left. As she paused near the blockage, her shoulders angled toward that hallway. She had remembered a lecturer mentioning that excess boxes were stored there while the main archive had been reorganized. A rusty cabinet had been locked by a bent latch, yet the hinge surrendered when she pressed with her multi-tool.
Inside the cabinet waited a cardboard box no larger than a shoebox. Dust silenced its edges. She lifted the lid, expecting brittle paper, yet a small carved elephant occupied the center, its marble surface cool against her palm. An unexpected shape stalled her hands, then a corner of yellowed paper peeked from beneath the figure. She removed the carving, ready to uncover the long-lost image, and a photograph curled upward, showing a dig team surrounding a half-exposed skeleton. The item she had chased all evening had been hidden by a souvenir. Light from the corridor lamp settled on her camera as she framed the shot. The photograph rested beneath the soft trunk of the miniature elephant.
