A bronze platter, a cracked ceramic vase, and a model trilobite lined the first glass case beside the exhibition hall doorway. Cool lamplight skimmed the polished floor, throwing steel-grey reflections toward the lockers area. Most displays had been installed during last winter’s renovation, their labels still bright despite low light. Nora paused beside a silver information kiosk, her sneaker squeaking while a tabby cat wove around her ankles. The animal flicked its tail and slipped through a narrow doorway that connected this hall to a dim corridor. From a distance the space looked like an indoor alleyway, long, cool, and striped with blue-grey shadows.

Nora had promised herself a close look at the prized ammonite fossil displayed halfway along the corridor. Its spiral ended in a pale crescent, fine ridges still filled with ancient sediment. She reached the case, but overhead lamps skated across the glass and hid every groove. A brisk tour group flooded the passage, shoulders brushing her backpack, and her view disappeared again. The cat reappeared on a bench opposite, tail twitching while the group drifted onward. Light still masked the fossil, so Nora raised her matte sketchbook cover like a shield against glare. Dusty streaks on the glass blurred the ridges even through that barrier.

A laminated card leaned against the bench; the cat batted it once, and it clattered onto the floor. The light sensor above reacted, dimming the nearest lamp for energy saving, and reflections vanished in an instant. Nora seized the chance, breathed on the glass, and wiped a small circle clear with the edge of her sleeve. Through the neat opening, the crescent tip of the ammonite shone almost silver, every ridge finally sharp. She began sketching quickly, pencil scraping against paper while the cat watched, blinking beneath the softened beams. By the time the lamp brightened again, her drawing covered half a page and faint moisture rings mottled the wiped spot. A narrow halo of fogged glass stayed behind her fingertips as footsteps echoed farther down the corridor.
