The morning sky held soft gray stripes. Emma rolled a small cart toward the library. On the cart lay her new painting. The picture showed passion fruit vines climbing a wooden frame. She has worked on it for three weeks and has promised to deliver it before noon. Cobblestones formed a winding pathway between tall hedges, yet last night’s rain had pooled in every dip. Water splashed over the wheels and dragged them sideways. Halfway along, a sudden gust bent the canvas backward. The cart jerked, and the painting nearly slipped. Emma straightened her spine and gripped the handle harder. She tried to push again, but the front wheel stuck fast in thick mud.

Footsteps splashed behind her while she rocked the cart. A boy named Luis, who had collected fallen branches for the park, stopped beside the mud. He hooked a branch under the spoke, twisted, and the wheel lifted free. Mud flew over both of them, and they laughed as drops ran down their coats. They walked together after that, each person steadying one side of the canvas. When the library steps appeared, a surprise waited. A temporary table had been placed outside, and the main hall was being cleaned. Boxes of fruit rested beside the queue, a quiet generosity displayed beside the art. Luis tilted the painting upright, and Emma slid it onto the stand built from wooden crates. Wind calmed, rain faded, and the picture stayed still under gentle afternoon light.
