Before sunrise, Nora lifts a woven basket of green apples. She wheels a small wooden cart toward the distant village gate. She hopes to reach the market while the church bell still echoes. The gravel track behind the farm feels damp from last night’s rain. One wheel has been painted red, yet it wobbles over loose stones. Wind rises from the river and tilts the basket that rests on the cart. Apples roll across grass, shining like marbles in pale light. She has walked this path since early spring, noting quiet seasonal cycles around her. A sleepy farmer guides two cows past her and smiles at the scattered fruit. Warm earth carries a mild scent of harvest even though autumn sits far ahead.

A sharp bleat suddenly interrupts the rattling cart. A curious goat darts from a hedgerow and knocks the cart sideways. More apples tumble down the slope, rolling toward shiny puddles. Wind still presses against her back while the goat blocks the wheel. Nora changes strategy; she tosses leafy branches toward a patch of clover.
