Lena had always dreamed of handing a homemade yarn scarf to her neighbor Malik before he moved away on Saturday. The project looked simple, and the scarf could grow quickly under her needles. Within minutes, the first stitches twisted themselves into a tight stubborn knot. She tugged gently, listening to the faint scrape of yarn against the wooden tabletop like rain on a roof. If she had known the spool was tangled, she would have started earlier. She unpicked every knot, rewound the ball carefully, whispered quiet encouragement, and tried again with slower, steadier hands. The thread slid smoothly, yet twenty centimeters later the cat suddenly pounced, tumbled noisily, and dragged the strand across the floor. By dusk the neat rows had been unravelled twice, and the scarf now looked like a limp ribbon. Still, quiet benevolence lingered, an unspoken overture visible in a tidy stack of self-served tea cups.
On Friday evening the scarf still ended halfway, so Lena changed tactics. She had been taught a faster stitch years earlier; uneven patterns no longer mattered with the deadline near. Her fingers moved in the new rhythm, and the fabric finally grew without interruption. Steam hissed upward while the warm iron flattened each ridge, leaving small delicate silvery tracks across the fabric. By midnight, a full length of soft gentle color trailed across the sofa arm. Footsteps echoed in the corridor at early dawn, quietly announcing Malik’s departure. Lena hurried out, but the front door of his flat already stood open and empty. A distant lift bell chimed below, so she dashed downstairs and wrapped the scarf around his shoulders. He answered with a genuine hug and surprised her with a matching parcel knitted by his sister. Two bright scarves rested side by side on the small wooden coffee table.
