Lucas Above the Evening Surf-

Story Content
English Original
Lucas adjusts the strap of his camera and steps onto the cliffside path. Evening light spreads across the sea, and waves drum softly below the cliff. He has walked this route many times, yet today the air carries new salt. The trail grows steep, so his boots dig into rough gravel for balance. A reusable bottle swings at his hip, ready to quench an expected thirst. Near the edge, a narrow ledge, which sits above the foamy water, waits. It has been carved by wind and spray, leaving strange pockets for toes. Lucas crouches, lifts the lens, and scans for the rare speckled seabird. Clouds drift eastward, opening a clear patch of sky behind the cliffs.
A sudden splash rises, and Lucas lowers the camera for a safer grip. Far below, a lone surfer has paddled near the rocks, waiting for a final wave. As he stands, the board skims sideways suddenly. Spray catches the evening light and startles the seabird upward. The bird lifts too early, drifting behind a jutting cliff, while the surfer’s silhouette fills Lucas’s frame. Two goals now collide: a perfect wildlife picture and the unexpected human figure blocking it. Lucas pauses, then edges left, using a gap between tall grasses that overhang the cliff. The new angle frames both shapes, surfer on silver water and bird gliding across spray. He presses the shutter twice, caps the lens, and tilts back the bottle to quench his thirst. Cool water trickles down his chin and wets the dusty collar. The seabird settles on a distant post, and the sea returns to steady rhythm.
Translation
