Sam had spent many evenings shaping a tiny wooden boat that carried a brass propeller. He has polished the hull and fixed a clockwork engine. Today, he packs every piece with slow, careful hands. A small cloth flag has been attached to the mast with bright thread. The town pond, famous for calm water, seems perfect for a first voyage. Carrying the boat inside a shoe box, he walks toward the park footbridge. A light breeze promises peace, almost spreading well-being through the bright morning air. Sam decides to take a chance and launches from the middle of the bridge.

The first turn of the key sets hidden gears moving; the engine gently clicks alive. A spiral spring inside, once tightened, has motivated the propeller without delay. However, a stronger gust rolls across the water and pushes the boat sideways. Sam's struggle begins; the line in his hand tangles while ducks circle curiously. He loosens his coat, then rips a strip from the inner liner with quick teeth. Wrapping the strip around the wavering rudder, he steadies the boat against the wind. The propeller gains clear water, clicks faster, and the small vessel reaches the far reeds. Ripples widen behind it, and Sam rests his elbows on the rail, breathing slowly. A final shimmer of sunlight dances on the hull while the pond settles again.
