The Arch That Kept Turning-

English Original
A rusty winch groaned beside the pier, its chain turning once before it stilled. Lily crouched near the posts where old rain had darkened the wood. She set a small brass ornament on its edge and flicked it. The ornament spun, wobbling like a tiny wheel; as it tipped, it nudged a loose gear that someone had left from boat repairs. The gear rolled in a slow arc, caught a coil of wire, and twisted the wire tight. The sudden twist pulled a wooden spool upright, and the spool began to whirl in place, humming across the damp plank.
Amos watched, then picked up an empty fish-tin that still carried the smell of salt and oil. He gave the tin a sharp spin along the same board. The spinning tin clipped the rising spool, and both objects veered toward a long stretch of hemp rope. The rope snagged a sewing needle that lay half hidden in a crack; the needle flipped into the air, landed point-down, and pivoted like the hand of a narrow clock. Its tip scratched a patch of green clover growing between boards, shaking tiny drops of water onto the gear Lily had moved earlier. The wet teeth slipped, altering their path, and the whole pattern lengthened.
Farther out, the harbor beacon flashed its regular signal, red then white, across gull feathers drifting on the breeze. Lily paused to rub her chilly palms while the last few pieces still turned. Her overturned spool and Amos's tilted gear leaned together like a narrow arch. Small vibrations from passing waves kept the arch quivering between their shoes.
Translation
