Layla balanced a corrugated box against her chest while stepping into the backyard. The afternoon breeze flipped her ponytail sideways and pressed the flaps of thin cardboard against her chin. She had collected magazines, ribbon, and a cracked tablet for tomorrow’s recycling art show. A row of damp leaves, which the morning rain had glued to each paving stone, slowed every footstep. She pictured the shelf in the garage, yet the wind kept pushing the lid open. The side gate had been left open, so the wind raced through unchecked. A plastic sword, left from a costume where she played a warrior, rattled inside and tapped her wrist.

Halfway across the yard, a sudden gust tilted the box, and magazines glided out like colorful birds. Layla planted one knee on the grass to steady herself, yet the pages kept sliding. She changed approach; instead of fighting the wind, she reached inside and removed the contents. Then she flipped the corrugated box upside down and covered the scattered papers with it. While gathering ribbon, her elbow nudged the cracked tablet. Its screen lit for a second and played an old video of her laughing at paint splashes. The unexpected sound startled a sleeping cat under the hedge. It sprinted forward and settled directly on the inverted box, pinning everything. Layla’s shoulders dropped, and a long breath puffed white in the cooling air. The yard stayed quiet while the cat blinked, perched like a calm guardian atop the joyful mess.
