Marcus stepped onto the museum’s rooftop just after the city’s midday bells. A retired military helicopter rested near the railing, its dark panels absorbing the sharp light. Rust freckled the metal, and a name once painted on the tail had flaked away, yet the machine still resembled a blunt liberator that had carved escape paths through bad weather long ago. He raised his camera; today he aimed to film how seedlings had colonized cracks around the landing grid. Below, a brass band practiced for an evening ceremony, trumpets cutting through traffic noise. Pigeons gathered on cables, ready to hover over unattended snacks once music drew larger crowds. Marcus pushed against a service door for a better angle, but the latch held. He leaned harder, shoulder braced, until hinges groaned and the frame shifted enough for him to slip through.
Beyond the door, a narrow maintenance path circled the rotor blades. His collaborator, Selene, knelt beside a homemade weather sensor, adjusting wires that kept twitching in the gusts. She waved without standing; the wind pressed her hair flat against her jacket. Marcus crouched, framing a shot of her device beside the dormant rotor. A sudden draft swept along the roof, rolled under the helicopter, and spun the loosened blades one slow quarter-turn. The metallic sigh rippled across the surface, startling the pigeons; wings slapped the air, and their gray bodies rose as one cloud, then scattered across adjoining rooftops. Selene’s sensor toppled, and its small screen slid toward a drain. Marcus lunged, catching the device just before it vanished into the grate; his knee skidded, scattering gravel into the grooves around the landing lines. The unexpected movement sent fine dust upward, drifting through a shaft of light like shaken powder. Below, the band paused, confused by the brief clatter overhead, and the trumpet notes faltered, leaving only distant engines and the irregular click of Marcus’s camera. Gravel finished bouncing, wings faded into silence, and the rotor lay still against the dusk.
