Milo pressed the carton against his jacket, protecting the single pink marshmallow that rolled inside like a tiny drum. A private gathering waited on the opposite building, and the only route lay along a narrow footbridge stretched between rooftops. On each side, concrete walls framed the open sky, and a lone tension cable anchored the planks above the traffic roar. Wind skimmed the surface, rattling loose papers that had settled near the rail. Milo paused at the first board, adjusted his grip, and chose to embark on the crossing before the evening light slid entirely behind the office towers.
Halfway across, a gust twisted the bridge, lifting one edge by several centimeters. The marshmallow bumped the carton wall; Milo steadied himself by crouching, palms flat on the rough timber. The metropolis beneath flickered with neon strips and moving headlights, an electric river far below his boots. Another pedestrian approached from the far side, carrying a cage that bounced with each step. Space tightened. Milo rose, tucked his elbows, and advanced with deliberate finesse, timing each movement to the sway so neither traveler sent the boards clattering. The stranger’s cage suddenly clipped the railing, releasing a sharp metallic ping that traveled along the cable and shook a thin layer of dust from an overhanging pipe. Both walkers stopped; the bridge stilled; the cage door stayed shut.
Silence followed, broken only by a late bus hissing at a distant corner. Milo nodded, and each person continued, now exchanging the mid-span with cautious sidesteps. When the last planks reached under his boots, Milo stepped onto the far roof, shoes tapping solid concrete. A warm draft rose from ventilation grilles, spinning the smell of grilled vegetables toward him. He opened the carton to inspect its cargo: the marshmallow had flattened slightly from the earlier pressure, forming a curious oval. Milo smiled without a word, placed it on a ceramic plate beside other treats, and rolled the carton shut again. Behind him, the suspended boards creaked once, then settled; above, the skyline rested in late sunlight.
Translation
