Mila on the Rooftop- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

Mila had promised her neighbor a picture of the evening sky. She carried a small camera up the stairwell that opened onto the building’s terrace. The rough step near the top felt sandy, and her sneaker slipped a little, so her elbow scraped the rail. A wide view waited beyond the door, but a random gust bounced off the walls and rattled the empty flowerpots. She set the tripod near a low wall which pointed toward the sinking sun, yet the wind pushed the fragile legs sideways. The camera was nearly toppled before she caught it with both hands.

Mila has practiced framing many times at home, but the moving air kept shifting the picture. She placed her jacket over the tripod hook; extra weight steadied the legs. Suddenly, a tiny newt crawled from a cracked planter and paused on the warm stone. Its orange tail flicked just as the wind calmed. Mila bent lower, curious, and her finger pressed the release at that exact instant. The lens, still pointed toward the skyline, captured a bright streak of cloud with the small creature at the edge. The unexpected guest turned, slid back under the pot, and silence settled. Light from the screen trembled on the terrace floor while dusk thickened around her.
