Mira left the village before sunrise, sketchbook pressed against her ribs while boots clicked over the damp lane. A broad hillside curved upward, carrying her toward an ornate mansion whose tiled roofs glimmered whenever the sky brightened for a heartbeat. She paused halfway, spreading her fingers to test the breeze, then climbed again, hoping to capture the first full shape of the building once daylight settled. Low clouds drifted across the slope and swallowed the path, so the mansion vanished, replaced by a wavering, shadowy outline that floated between gray air and darker earth.
Fog thickened near a rust-flecked side gate. Mira pushed; the hinge groaned and halted halfway. She shifted weight, pressed a shoulder, and the iron bar slid with a sudden clank, sending a small shower of rust onto her sleeve. Beyond the gate, trimmed grass sank below knotted tree roots. Droplets clung to every branch, tapping faintly in a scattered rhythm. As she walked, the ground flattened, and the mist parted just enough to reveal stone shapes embedded in turf. They formed an uneven circle, each block no higher than her knees, their surfaces dimpled by time.
She crouched beside the nearest slab and brushed moss away with quick, careful strokes of her palm. Flakes of lichen broke loose, uncovering grooves that curved inward like fragments of a forgotten diagram. More stones waited farther out, connected by narrow lines scratched into soil. The layout resembled sketches she once saw of a neolithic settlement: simple dwellings aligned toward the rising sun long before the mansion existed. Layers of flint and clay under her boots hinted at a fascinating history pressed beneath the manicured lawn. A gust rolled along the slope, tugging mist uphill and revealing the mansion’s wide terrace beyond the circle, as though two distant centuries now shared a single morning.
Voices drifted from lower paths; hikers moved through thinning fog, their silhouettes pausing when the stones came into view. Camera shutters clicked, echoing the earlier gate’s clang. Birds launched from a row of holm oaks and wheeled overhead, tracing slow spirals above building and ruin alike. Sunlight slid across the slope, coloring wet grass with pale gold until every droplet lost its silver edge. Morning light rested on the quiet stones.
Translation
