Faye stepped through the crooked metal stile that marked the meadow’s edge, the morning glare diffusing against a curtaining fog. She had crossed this patch of grass since childhood, certain of its gentle slope, of the thin ribbon of creek that normally glinted from the far side, and even of the distant overpass whose concrete ribs framed the sky beyond. Today the view stopped after three paces; stalks in front shone sharp and wet, while anything farther dissolved into a pale hush. Seldom had the light pressed so close, every droplet on yarrow leaves catching it like mirrors. A kestrel’s cry dropped from nowhere, and the sound too felt abbreviated, swallowed before it could find an echo.
Her plan remained simple: pick a fistful of yarrow for the kitchen vase, then circle back for tea. Yet the ground contradicted memory. Grass lay flattened in wide swirls, as though a brief tempest had spun low and silent across the field while she was away. A bottle cap winked from one swirl, a strip of torn cloth from another. Her sketchbook tucked beneath her arm, she followed the pattern until the fog thinned abruptly near the footings of the overpass. There, amber sunlight slanted through a missing rail, turning the vapor into drifting sheets that appeared, paused, and seem to vanish into thin air between the pillars.
She stopped before a shallow depression beneath the central span; what halted her was the way light collected inside it, dimming toward its rim like water in a bowl. A stalk of yarrow, bruised but upright, glowed palest gold at the hollow’s center. Faye crouched, then reconsidered and remained on one knee, fingers hovering above the stem without touching. Had the breeze been steadier, the fog would have cleared long enough for her to measure the mark, yet each breath of wind rebuilt the curtain. The meadow she thought she knew rearranged itself with every pulse of light, and certainty thinned alongside it.
Eventually she rose, not plucking a single bloom, and walked back along the flattened trail. The fog thickened again, yet a ribbon of amber flickered at her shoulder, casting her outline onto a curtain of vapor that folded the silhouette away the instant she moved. Behind her, the overpass pillars faded to dim rectangles; ahead, the stile gleamed with beads of moisture, exactly where she had begun. She paused, pressed a palm to its cool metal, then slipped through once more. A kestrel wheeled overhead—somewhere unseen—and the same cry from earlier drifted down, brittle and brief, before the whiteness swallowed it.
Translation
