English Original
Luke reached the rocky balcony above the misty valley just after dawn. Early mist slid between pine trunks, brushing his sleeves with cold beads. He had spent six weeks mapping the scarlet kite’s path, convinced this ledge offered the clearest angle. The narrow shelf had been carved by decades of steady rain, leaving barely enough space for one careful backpack. Today unfolded like an emotional rollercoaster in slow motion; knees shook, breaths shortened, yet fingers arranged tripods with practiced rhythm. The session represented a make or break situation because migration winds would carry the bird north tomorrow.
An enthusiastic gust burst over the ridge and rocked the tripod before the loosened lens cap spun away. Luke slapped a palm against the camera, yet the leather strap slipped and the body knocked against stone. If he had tightened the strap earlier, the camera would have stayed still instead of swinging like a bell. He reset the legs, pressed the mount deeper, and wedged a flat pebble under the front footing. Moments later sunlight returned, but sweeping clouds marched in and painted the valley grey again. Water droplets gathered on the filter, so he wiped the glass, only to smear faint streaks across the frame. Every delay chipped at the schedule, turning the chase into a make or break effort balanced on unreliable stone.
The turning point arrived without warning when the scarlet kite drifted past the ledge and vanished behind Luke’s shoulder. He pivoted too late, and the empty sky offered nothing but layered cloud. A puddle beside the tripod suddenly mirrored bright wings, so he crouched, angled the camera downward, and snapped three frames. Reflection reversed the colours, yet feathers shone sharply against dark water, creating an image no guidebook had ever shown. His shoulders loosened while the bird soared onward, unaware of the photograph it had granted. Light rested on the fresh photo beside his boot.
Translation
