English Original

Emilio set the dusty music box on his workshop table, hoping to make it sing before noon. The box, shaped like a tiny stage, once released a canary made of brass, yet only the bird’s feet remained. He lifted the lid; a stale smell drifted out, and the spring refused to turn. Light from the window shifted across the scratched lacquer, showing how many rainy seasons had passed since anyone cared for it. He reached for oil, but the nozzle slipped, spilling a dot on the felt. Despite the oil, the stubborn spring refused to yield and remained locked in place. A thin rain began outside, drumming softly, marking each minute he lost. A thin crack near the hinge widened when he teased it with a screwdriver. The opening exposed a screw whose head had been worn flat by earlier repairs. The melody inside had been silenced by time, and his fingers tapped the table edge faster. The tall clock on the wall ticked faster in his ears, pushing him to hasten his work.

At noon's edge, he chose a different approach, determined to outwit the aging mechanics. The worn screw had been tightened by a hand steadier than his. He filed a shallow groove, fitted a flat tool, and at last eased it free. Inside the compartment, a smaller chamber appeared, lined with faded velvet that somehow preserved serenity in the cramped space. Under the velvet he uncovered a second spring and a folded card listing forgotten tunes. If he had discovered that repertoire sooner, he would have skipped many experiments. A hidden catch clicked, and the brass bird leaped upward, intact after all, its paint still bright. The unexpected sight made him laugh aloud, and fresh oil finally reached every gear. When the key turned, the box chimed a clear trill, richer than he remembered. He listened wholeheartedly until the final note drifted away across the dim afternoon light. The repaired box rested on the counter, its lid open and its gears ticking.

Translation
