He shoved the barn-wide workshop door along its dry runner, and hard cedar boards rasped together like sandpaper on stone. The afternoon carried choppy laughter of sparrows through the gap, but inside, only the irregular tick of a wall clock answered. Dorian set a flat oak panel on the bench, rapping its edge twice; the blows echoed under the rafters. He aimed to fit the panel into a toy chest framework before nightfall, a task promised to his younger sister. Sawdust hissed under his boots while he checked the pencil grid that marked each joint. The lines, blurred by thumbprints, had lost fine resolution, so he retraced them with brisk strokes, his diligence measured by the steady rhythm of graphite sliding across grain.
He lifted the panel toward the waiting frame; wood on wood gave a gruff scrape, then jammed halfway with a throaty groan. The bench vibrated, and loose plane shavings fluttered to the floor. First adjustment: he tapped the rim with his mallet; the tone rang hollow, yet the panel refused to budge. Next, he seized a small chisel, angling its edge; each pared sliver landed with a gentle patter, but a stubborn ridge still rasped against the side rail. While he leaned closer, a muffled pop under the bench interrupted the workshop hush. A bowed underpinning beam from an older project had warped in the warm air, pushing a jar of screws off balance; the jar toppled, screws pinging across the tiles like scattered rain.
The sudden scatter warned him that the whole framework might be under fresh strain. He wedged a pine off-cut beneath the curved beam; the wood sighed as tension eased. Returning to the chest, he braced one knee, pressed again, and the panel eased inward, releasing a low, agreeable thrum. The fit stayed rough, yet it would hold until morning tools could refine it. Outside, crickets gathered into a thin orchestra, tangled with the distant bell of the village clock. He drew the heavy door toward its jamb once more. The timber that had rasped wide earlier had shifted; it now hovered an inch from closure, a loose plank along its edge quivering against the frame.
Translation
