Milo balanced a wrapped clay jar against his ribs and stepped into the marketplace at midday. Canvas roofs flapped overhead, tossing stripes of shadow across baskets of citrus. Chalk lines quartered the wide plaza, and each quadrant bustled at its own pace: drummers on the north side, spice sellers to the east, fabric spinners near the fountain, potters beyond a ring of tubs. Milo’s target sat in that far patch of pottery, yet every route looked tangled with elbows and crates.
He slid toward the fountain, where a low wooden deck served as an interactive platform for street dancers. Squares on its surface lit up when pressed, so stomping feet triggered bursts of blue and green. Children crowded the edges, laughing each time a new tile flashed. Milo tried to pass behind them, but a sudden leap by one boy rocked the platform; its boards shifted, and the jar in Milo’s arms tilted. He caught it, though the movement forced him sideways into a stack of reed mats. The mats fell, blocking the narrow gap he had planned to use.
A vendor with a glass tank whistled while gathering the toppled reeds. Tiny river turtles paddled inside the tank; their miniature habitat included pebbles, a bent twig, and a patch of waterweed. Milo knelt to help, sliding mats back into a roll. As he worked, participation in the dance spread beyond the platform—clapping hands rippled out, and casual walkers began to hop across stray chalk marks. The new rhythm pulled many bodies away from the southern path, opening a clear stripe of stone near the citrus baskets.
Milo nudged the final mat into place, nodded to the vendor, and traced that fresh stripe. Wind carried citrus scent while the distant drumming softened. A curtain of bright shawls parted as two shoppers compared colors, leaving just enough room for him to cross into the pottery area. The waiting potter lifted an unglazed bowl, inspecting Milo’s jar with raised eyebrows. Milo set the unchipped vessel on a low table and stepped back as the craftsman eased it toward the kiln. Beside the kiln, fresh bowls rested in tidy rows.
Translation
