Leo lowered a narrow dinghy from the pier, planning to reach the white yacht anchored beyond the buoy line. The toolbox beside his feet held a bright hammer and an old brass compass that had guided fishing trips since childhood. Salt carried by the breeze stuck to his lips, and a distant gull called above the soft slap of water against wood. He has checked the sky; the pale clouds looked harmless, so a single wooden paddle seemed enough. However, once he pushed away, a crosswind funneled between warehouses, tilting the bow and spinning him sideways.

The wind was not the only obstacle. A drifting mooring rope, which had been left loose after the morning tide, coiled around the paddle blade. The rope was pulled tight by the current, locking the dinghy in place. Leo reached into the toolbox; the genuine steel head of the hammer glinted as he tapped the knot until the fibers slackened. Free once more, he glanced at the compass; the needle trembled but still pointed toward the channel gap. He angled the paddle shorter, slicing water in quick strokes that balanced wind and tide. When the bow touched the yacht, the unexpected twist appeared: no one waited on deck—the crew had already gone ashore. The dinghy bumped the hull, and Leo caught the ladder, water still dripping from his sleeve.
