Lucas paced along the waterfront path, heading for a convenience store where a small parcel waited behind the counter. Wind swept in from the river, pushing clouds like slow ships overhead and sliding stray cans along the asphalt. Two routes opened ahead: a narrow alley clogged with delivery bikes and an elevated footbridge stretching over the rail yard. The bridge, slick yet empty, offered clear merit over the cramped alley, so Lucas lifted his hood and began to traverse the damp planks, droplets leaping from his boots with every step.
Mid-span, a sudden gust flattened his coat and snatched a folded receipt from his pocket. The paper fluttered, skimmed the rail, and disappeared onto gravel below. Lucas steadied himself, palms pressed against the cold metal, before hurrying down the far ramp. At the store entrance a sensor door shuddered, then stuck; one firm nudge opened it with a hollow clack. Inside, cartons towered in haphazard stacks while tape guns snapped. The busy scene felt like an all hands on deck rush, trolleys edging through aisles and rattling shelves.
Lucas slipped past, lifting his bag whenever a wheel clipped his heel. Near the drinks cooler, a clerk’s ladder wobbled as a trolley brushed against it. Lucas caught the side rail, steadying the frame, yet a crate of tangerines perched on the top step slid off. Bright spheres scattered, bouncing along neon-lit tiles. Staff dropped to their knees, sweeping fruit toward plastic trays as customers sidestepped the rolling citrus. One runaway tangerine spun beneath a shelf and nudged a cardboard tube into view. The tube rolled out; Lucas bent, discovering his lost receipt curled safely inside the damp cylinder, the ink still legible.
At the checkout, a small placard beside steaming paper cups outlined the store’s new hospitality approach, inviting shoppers to sip hot tea while waiting. Lucas wrapped chilled fingers around a cup, steam misting the plexiglass shield as the clerk scanned his parcel. Behind them, the last tangerines clinked into order and carton flaps folded closed. Outside, drizzle faded to a pale mist. Lucas slipped the rescued receipt into a dry pocket, glanced back through the glass, and walked on while light from the storefront rested on quiet pavement.
Translation
